Shortage of pulses in India: understanding how markets incentivize supply response

Purpose This paper aims to understand the significant farm and market-level factors that incentivize adoption marketing of pulses influencing its supply response changing demand. Design/methodology/approach The authors first use a modified Nerlovian model using secondary data identify major price non-price pigeon pea, black green gram in growing states India. Second, primary qualitative map value chain from retail how proportional fixed transaction costs (FCTs) influence market participation growers limit transmission quality information. Findings shows some positive on area allocation for pea negative effects yield increase competing crops acreage. However, most part, Kharif is inelastic prices long run. Irrigation, rainfall yields lag year are shown have pulses. study reveals low yields, landholding size geographical disadvantages high agro-climatic risk poor connectivity hinder access farmers relative other crops. Market power favor buyers information disadvantage sellers, their ability participate markets. Research limitations/implications A quantitative would be required magnitude costs. Originality/value helps gives suggestions direct policy rectify this.
